I just got an email from GoDaddy.com promising to make your domain registration "private". All you need to do is signup each domain name you own with their service and they will make the registration information on the domain name privat.

HOW? you might ask, well it works like this...
The way it works is simple...

Domains By Proxy becomes the registrant of record for any domain name you designate.

The "WHOIS" database is then populated with Domains By Proxy's contact information.

Domains By Proxy's proprietary registration and email handling systems even let you elect whether or not to receive postal mail or email!

So, for $6.00 / year I can give up my rights to my domain name! Whoppie! Am I missing something here or is this incredibly unethical?

The situation in the UK is that the Office of the Information Commissioner has "declared" that WhoIS records should be optionally anonymous, to protect the privacy of individual registrants.

Maybe this is being adopted more widely, and what you've received is someone cashing in on it, by simplifying the anonimization process in return for a fee.

Perhaps, but I'm a little wary about having them down as the Registrant for my domain. I've had some registrars in the past put themselves down as the registrant, and it's been a pain in the you-know-what to get fixed. I would feel alot better if they had something like "ICANN approved" with a link to the ICANN site confirming that I do in fact retain ownership.

It's like signing over my house to a 3rd party so they can get all my mail. Well, I think I delete the mail and deal with it.
