Solus Email Requirements

Hi.

Are there any guidelines as to what must be offered regarding signing up for receiving email marketing?

For example, I co-run a website loosely based around the VBulletin engine, and one of the options during member registration is do members want to receive promotional emails (content related to the website they're joining) from us.

Do we have to offer the option of signing up for these during the registration process, or can we just set everyone to be signed up by default, as long as the emails that get sent out have an unsubscribe option within them?

You need to ask your webhost what their policy is.

Most of the webhosts now have a limit on the number of emails per day,
or per hour. Some offer special use if they deem your "newsletter" to be
legitimate and it offers an unsubscribe feature.

This is something between you and your webhost.

Well, we only send one a week so I don't think that's going to be too much of a problem.

I really wanted to know if there were any kind of legal requirements in terms of what they must have - ie you must have a unsubscribe option, but you don't have to offer it at the sign-up process, for example.

I've never seen any legal thing on this.

It would be very hard to do, since every country has their own laws.

But, it would be ethical to have a means of removal from the list,
even if it was as simple as a reply to "remove me please".
