diving in - DVD conversion

I have a DVD-ROM drive and I would like to take a seven minute clip from a DVD and convert it into something I can put on my web site - wmv, avi, mpg, mov, even some form of Flash.
"How do I do it?" is kind of vague and all-encompassing, so I thought I'd go with, Where do I start?
Do I need additional hardware or software?
The DVD - being homemade - is not copy-protected and I own the copyright.
Is there a really informative site that will walk me through this?

Check out this site (http://www.doom9.org/). They may have what you need. You'll need a program to get the vob files off of the dvd. DVD Decryptor works well for this. You will then need a program that converts these files to a video format. Dr. Divx can convert vob files to .avi but it isn't free.

One method you can do is just take the movie on the DVD convert it to a movie on your computer using like DivX or Xvid codec like the tutorials on Doom9 show then you can use a program like VirtualDub to take the part of the movie you want out and save it as another movie file.
