Arrays and other functions

I'm reasonably experienced with php.. but still dont understand the concept of

-> and =>

eg:
return $this->response;
or
$this->request_string .= $this->ValidRequestPair($key, $value);

unfortunately, i still dont grasp it 100%

from what i gather saying $this->result is the same as saying $result ?

so why the $this? and is it always the term '$this' ?
