What is the best search engine. In my opinion, its gotta be google.co.uk. What do you think? I have made the poll multiple choise, incase you have two favourates.

Google by any vote....seeing as it emerged from a small project at Stanford into the worlds biggest and most trusted search engine. I think Microsoft's MSN search engine was using Google technology up until the end of last year.

I think this thread should be moved into the General web forum, as the category of this thread doesn't suit this forum ;)

I use google often but I find GrabAll (http://www.graball.com) rather useful as well, lets me compare google and yahoo searches side by side.

I voted for Google, but, to be honest, I've never really used any of the other search engines. Google.co.uk is my homepage, as well as my default search engine, so definitely my favourite.

One SE I do hate is Ask Jeeves - the results are always full of crap, and it's a lot harder to find the stuff you actually want. Part of the reason I dislike it is that the design seems to be very cluttered (I haven't used it for a while, so it may have changed since then), unlike Google's simplistic layout.

Is it just me or is the poll a bit mucked up?

Google I think is just about the best around...one thing I get really hacked off about is all stuff like alexa - a search engine offering crap - adware in other words.

For product searching, i use www.kelkoo.co.uk , i have also found that the product search on ask jeeves, uses the information on kelkoo. What does everyone else use.

>>I also use ebay, but thats becides the point<<

Well there was http://www.yagoohoogle.com/ but seems like they aren't operating anymore. It was similar to graball but it was just basic search, not search of images and everything else.

I always found kelkoo too unreliable - I just stick to ebay, ebuyer and CCL when looking for stuff in my main shopping category - computer components :D

Ask Jeeves has so many sponsored results, that i take a couple of miniuts just to find the results you were looking for.

Tell me about it, I was doing a search for something I heard about in church and got porn and satanic crap. That was about the end of my use of AskJeeves.

Okay back on topic. How long will it be before Google becomes the next microsoft? You know they got the search engine, they got the email, they seem to be dominating among the rest of the search engines.

I think if it ever does, it will be a long time. No one really hates googles dominance, because they can do things right. All your search are belong to google, but M$ has set us up the bomb...there is no way to escape make your time

The reason I don't think Google will become the next Microsoft is that Microsoft rose when the industry was in it's infancy, and the competition has gotten smarter since. Not to mention that part of the competition is Microsoft themselves and they definitely won't sit back and let Google take over the world.

uh...And google didn't?

Google have so far always met users needs and haven't tried to shove anything down their throats (ok, there was that whole thing about content replacement with the google toolbar)

Google didn't rise when the industry was at it's infancy, just this last few years.

The computer industry has matured a lot in the past 15 years, and there are a lot more big players and it gets a lot more attention. In order to "pull a Microsoft" you need to step on many toes, so I find it hard to believe that another company (any company, not just Google) will be able to rise to the top and take control of just about everything like Microsoft did without competitors, lawyers, governments, and consumers getting in their way. In theory it's possible but the chances are much slimmer now. Even big ol' MS are starting to feel the competition breathing down their neck nowadays.

On the topic of searching, CF's persistence mechanism is questionable: anyone else noticed that archived threads seem to vanish?

Yeah, sometimes we can't find exactly what want in Google. I don't use Yahoo search.

Yahoo?? They suck... MSN? there new search engine sucks (in my mind, they used to be better than Google...) Google? The best, the most answers, the most User-friendly, and the fastest.

But then.......Dogpile.com isn't too bad. It's a mix of:Yahoo, MSN, Ask Jeeves, and Google. I like them, but prefer Google (partially because I'm too lazy to type a few more letters...(1 to be exact :P)

Because smilies in sigs have been disabled on CodingForums.
And that "unrelated link" will probably be removed, as it could be classed as an advert seeing as it isn't in your sig and it is totally unrelated to the thread topic.
