Hey guys, just a quick question, can you write php in notepad and test it?

Yeah you can, but you would have to upload it to a webserver which has PHP and Apache installed on it so you could run it, but if you install Apache and PHP on your home computer you can do everything through localhost in your browser :)

PHP is a serverside language, it's not like html which is a clientside language.

For php to work, it has to be executed, or parsed by a server such as apache (http://www.apache.org). You can't just double click on the file and it work.

You can download firepages phpdev which is linked in one of the stickies in this forum, which includes php, mysql (the database) and apache already set up for you.

You can use any text editor to write php

php can be configured to run on apache, or you can configure it to work with IIS or PWS for windows. Personally, I'd install the apache.
You can download apache from www.apache.org, seek the HTTP section for details.
You can download php from www.php.net, seek the downloads section, go with either 4.3.10+ or 5.x, depending on what you need to do. 5.x is newest, and isn't widely supported as of yet.
You can download mysql from www.mysql.org. Seek the download section and install its basic mysql. I'd recommend also securing phpMyAdmin as this will make mysql a cinch.

Installing is a piece of cake, even for the beginner. Grab the binary section for php, and the installer for the mysql and apache. Make sure its the windows binary. Run apache to install it and select its base directory. I chose C:\Server for my location, which is also where php and mysql are located: C:\Server\Apache, C:\Server\PHP, C:\Server\MySQL. Configuring your apache is another treat, firepages should be able to help you with a tutorial on his site... his address is in his profile here.
Then you can create webpages from notepad, save as a .php extension, and test it out. Good to go!

Nathan99....Go to the second thread at the top of the PHP section titled "PHPDEV - Download Development Package for PHP, Perl and MySQL" and download the package. It has everything you need to set up a PHP/MySQL enviroment on your computer without going online.

All you need to write PHP and MySQL code is Notepad once you have installed this package.

You can... but it is almost totally useless if you want to use it for webpages.

how do i use PHPDev?

It installs onto your computer like any other program. If everything works fine you then go to "Start/Programs/phpdev98_ME" to launch it. Once running you will have lots of links to choose such as "phpmyadmin", "start_here.htm".

To see your php pages put your files into a folder into "C:/phpdev/www" and the folder will show up in the above list.

...or use XAMPP, which is really easy to install, config and use ;)
