I just had to buy a new processor & mobo for a pc at work. For the processor, I got an AMD Athalon 64 2800+ Socket 754 processor (with the shiny black top :)). So, do I need thermal paste between it and the heatsink/fan like the old style amd processors, or will it do fine without it as the processor itself is not sticking out? Please respond fast, cause I need to get out of the office soon...Thanks in advance!

Oops, looks like there is thermal paste already on the heatsink included with the chip itself! Sorry for the wasted thread...

If you've got it available, you'd be better off replacing the paste that came with the sink -- it's usually not that good.

Yeah I've heard a few problems regarding overheating when using the standard AMD cooling paste and heatsink/fan which comes with the processors. Coolmaster are pretty good :)

Jamie.
