View Full Version : getting a link to view source

Is there any way to get a link to open the HTML file to source so I can edit it? The situation is thus: I have a large collection of files holding meta data for a novel I'm writing. I've arranged these into html pages, rather nicely styled, and I have an HTML "menu" containing links to all of these. I'd like to be able to click on a link and have it open in an editor (preferably SubEthaEdit or Smultron), rather than have to open the file using the editing application. Is this just a pipe dream? Do I make any sense?

If you are using Internet Explorer there are some tweaks you can make using TweakUI (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx) to change the default view source handler. If you are using Firefox, there is a View Source with (https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&category=Developer%20Tools&numpg=10&id=394) extension.

I'm actually using Camino 0.8, one of the recent nightlies. (I don't like Firefox's keyboard controls, and it's a bit slow for me.)

I don't think a extention such as the one for FF is available for camino, however I could be wrong.

Is there any other way than an extension? Something with the HTML code at all? I can get it to open in a new window, easily enough.
Or would this be purely a software issue?

I think you are talking about something other than changing your browser's default view source editor here?
Are you saying that rather than having to open SubEthaEdit, locate the file and open it that way, you wish SubethaEdit (with the file) to open when you click a link on your html pages?
I've never thought of that! IMO it is definately something that should be possible, whether it is possible - I don't know. I'll be interested to find out though.......

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying--only you said it better. :)
I hope it *is* possible. How would it work? You'd have to arrange it as a kind of download-open-automatic override. Maybe with Tiger (whenever I get it), Automator could be set up... but then it might do it for *all* links...

Yes, maybe you could set this at an OS prefs level, but then as you said, this would affect the opening of any hypertext document.
All I can think of really, is to have two links for each link in your html docs: One that opens the html doc in the browser, and another that opens/downloads a text file?
Is this something the fabled *Hypercard* would have been capable of?
Kind regards'
Gary
