not sure but wouldn't you need IIS 6 and the dotNet framework?

edit...I gotta feeling I'm gonna learn something here, lol :)

If it is XP Pro simply install IIS from the XP installation disk
Start -> Settings -> Control panel -> Add or Remove Programs -> Add/Remove Windows Components select the box next to IIS and then click next.

If it is XP home there are 4 options
1) install IIS. it gets a bit trickier to install IIS, Microsoft says it cannot be done but there is a work around (http://www.iis-resources.com/modules/AMS/article.php?storyid=48) that does indeed work.

2) you can install Cassini (http://asp.net/Projects/Cassini/Download/Default.aspx?tabindex=0&tabid=1) which is another MS server that will work with XP Home.

3) you can install the Microsoft Web Matrix (http://www.asp.net/webmatrix/default.aspx?tabIndex=4&tabId=46) which includes a server that works on XP Home.

4) you can install the beta version of Visual Web Developer (http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/express/vwd/) which is for ASP.NET 2.0. ASP.NET 2.0 is the newest version of ASP.NEt and is currently in Beta testing

I heard that Web Matrix was a HEAVILY cut down version of Visual Studio

Also, I wouldn't bother installing IIS on XP home..I'd just go for Pro personally :)

When I got my new laptop there was no model like mine with XP PRO at the store, so why pay the extra money for another o/s? The workaround is a simple solution to get IIS installed which then allows me to use Visual Studio to work in ASP.Net on the laptop. Yes web matrix is a watered down version of Visual Studio it is also free, and includes a webserver which runs on XP Home. This is a good option for those who cannot afford to spend another $150 FOR XP Pro plus $1500 + for Visual Studio .Net Enterprise.

Highly valid point Miranda, however as I'm a student I can get academically priced software - like the pro version of Visual Studio .Net for about £70 when the professional retail licence is about £600
