I am looking at getting a USB or fireware external sounbd card for my laptop. At the minute i use the headphone socket on my laptop for making tapes and them come out rather rubbish. I did a google on this but got confused by some of the techno babble they came out with. LOads of the cards i saw where 5.1 surround sound where as all i'm after is stereo output, i also thought about using it for when helping my mate do discos, i could play some tunes direct from my laptop. I have a budget of less than £70 (flexible a bit).

Well I have a creative soundblaster extigy for my laptop. It's a 5:1 soundcard and goes nicely with my 5:1 surround sound speaker system. Sound quality is pretty good although I got it off ebay for about £50 :p

that sounds good, but i haven't made it to the 5.1 era so i'm still on stereo.
If i can find a card with both all the the better, but i don't see how i can use 5.1 with my hifi that only has stereo sound.

You need 5:1 speakers to use 5:1, however my decoder still works plugged into non-5:1 speakers :)

so what we are saying is that you can use a 5.1 output sound card and sucessfully connect stereo speakers to listen to the output in stereo. am i correct?
My mate said you could do it and just connect to the front speaker output on the 5.1 sound card.
Sorry i'm not very technology wise in this field.

Yeah.....you can use a 5:1 decoder on non-5:1 speakers but the output won't be 5:1, it would be stereo. I've done it.
