always viewing folder contents as 'list'

Whenever I open a folder on my PC I want the contents of the directory to be viewed as a list.
Sounds simple enough, however WinXP doesnt seem to want to let me keep the setting as when I open the directory later (after having switched off the PC) it is back to hundreds of big chunky icons in standard view.

Dont tell me to go into folder options and select "view all folders like current folder" because I've been clicking that *%&£$! button for months and it doesnt do any good.

Does anyone have a solution?, a hidden registry tweak maybe?

When you went to folder options and clicked remember each view, did you click apply to all folders? Also this seems to be a problem (http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/r1075925998) with winxp. I have a program that says Explorer will only remember 400 folders or so, it allows me to change that number. Its called TweakUI (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx) its made by microsoft.
