my PC is dieing!

hi there...
i am stuck!!

a while ago my computer randomly, when i was working, the screen would just turn off and i could only get it back on by rebooting (the screen is fine).

i changed motherboards and it kept doing it randomly and the same but the PC speaker would beep before turning of the screen (computer would freeze for half a second before this)

then after a few times of this, i changed RAM (to 1GB from 768mb) and it seemed to be fine for a week.
then it happend again..

it froze for a second, computer speaker beeped, then screen turned off, then I went to see what was going on inside the computer and before i could get to it, it rebooted itself and windows came back to me after reboot with a 'serious error'.

I assume you have virus protection & firewall installed and up to date.

I would check temps and make sure all your fans are spinning. Sounds like a heat thing to me. If all the fans and heat looks ok it could be...

Oh sure, it could be other things... I was just giving you some things to check. Are you overclocking, by any chance? Could be a hard drive going bad.

Try reinstalling XP or XP with Service Pack 1. If you don't get STOP errors anymore, something in XP Service Pack 2 is causing this problem. If you still get STOP errors, then it's almost certainly some piece of hardware that's about to die on you (most likely your mobo).

Finally, downloading the newset drivers isn't always a good idea, as they can sometimes have more bugs than older, more stable drivers. Try to use older drivers that are certified compatible with XP SP2, and see if that works.

What components are you using from the original system?

I'm not using a Logitech mouse - just a MS Bluetooth Elite Set

I am only using the CPU from the original PC setup.

It could be, as previously mentioned, a cooling problem. However, what CPU is it and have you tested it in another motherboard? It's *possible* that the CPU itself is on the blink :eek:

How do you test a cooling problem?

It's a Pentium 4 2.667ghz.
I doubt a Intel CPU would be faulty... after all i've seen their testing facility and its amazing

you find a program like motherboard monitor and it reads the probes that exist (if they do) inside the system and shows there temperature.

I think the frying range is around 75+ degrees celuises.

My comp once ran at 65 and had some issues.

My bros pc ran at 189 degrees farenheight after the cpu on the second hand board that in fitted decided to go and not run the heatsink fan :(..

Now I'm gonna have to get a new cpu, heatsink etc..well the board I put in didn't work anyway :mad:

Well, it's sitting quite comfortably at 32 degrees celcius (CPU) and 37 degrees celcius (MB)

(using ASUS Probe 2)

I doubt it can be a problem... this machine never goes after 40...

If the monitor works on another machine, then I'd look at the video card possibly going out on you. If that the case, its pretty easy to uninstall and reinstall :D

Yeah but didn't he replace that? he was only using the CPU from the original setup :p

Could be a driver problem, however I think we eliminated it out above.
