Hi there, I have an old alpha 400 server, it runs windows but I did something to the configuration, (was playing with the console at booting time), now it does not want to boot up...I tried everything going to the console and changing the boot up partition, I even tried to re-format the hd and install linux, or other version of windows, but it does not like it....

so the first question is..can any other windows be installed in those machines, like 2000 advanced server...can linux be installed in those computers.....

dummy questions but I'm trying to use that box as a web server....

Windows 2000 Advanced Server should be able to be installed on that machine....but if it isn't booting, what are the error messages? if it is something like primary master hard disk fail then either you have a dodgy hard disk or you have incorrect BIOS/CMOS settings...

What version of Windows did you have installed on there before?

I had win nt 4.1 ...it was working fine, but then I deleted something from the bios config. so now is trying to find the windows loader and cannot find it...I guess I changed the partition where win is installed...any way I'm trying to start a fresh installation...but it did not boot with the win/or/red hat cds... it's giving me a os not found error.............

well do you know what you have deleted from the bios config...you can't really delete much - only change settings, however your hard disk needs to be set to primary master.

The OS not found error is being given out because the motherboard can not find a OS on that disk.....try and boot from cd then try and install it, if not what are teh error messages?
