What is CSS?

I have heard this mentioned quite a lot. What is it?

Well they are used to control the layout, styling etc of web pages, depending on how its used.

csszengarden.com is great. But it doesn't tell you anything. Anyone can make the same designs using table-based layout.

Don't get me wrong, I use Cascading Style Sheets exclusively. But just telling someone to check out "The Garden" doesn't really tell them anything.

Fair enough. But the point was to show what COULD be done using CSS, that's all.

If you go to Webmonkey (http://www.webmonkey.com) you can read the lessons on css by mulder. It explains the basics AND shows examples.

Not true... the point of the Zen Garden is that ALL of the designs posted use the exact same source code. Try that with a table-based layout. :)

Oh, so very true. But I wouldn't send someone there without telling them why first. Death to tables (except for tabular data, of course)!
