TBH I'm a bit confused  as to the meaning of this thread, lol..

I'm not criticizing, but what happened to using "for" where it should be used instead of it's numerical counterpart?

... This is Geek News and Humour isn't it?

.. Does it really matter?

.. Does it really matter?

Actually yes it does. Four and for have two completely different meanings. One is a number, the other is a preposition meaning "in the interest of", "in order to get", "with regard to", and a few other meanings in this case.

In your mentality, does it really matter if I use the word cause (or worse, the dreaded 'cuz') instead of because? Take that and think about it.

Let's all use real English grammar and none of this internet English everyone seems so apt to adopt. Otherwise, I'll be forced to knock out a few posts with words some of you have never heard of before (or even though existed).

I know that this has been bought up before, and I know that I am going off topic but I feel that it needs to be addressed - when is this so called "txt" speak going to cease being use on fora?

I understand that you want to use real English grammar and not internet English, but you can't force people to change the way they communicate to others via the internet..
I totally agree that people should use real English grammar, but some people are lazy on the internet and don't want to right "for" instead of "4", and I don't think that they should be criticized for it..
And if it does really matter that much to you.. then just don't read it, but don't criticize him just because he wrote "4" instead of "for", it is a free country you know..

Just because it is the Geek News and Humour forum doesn't mean you have to spell like crap.

English may be your 2nd language, but there are people on this forum who also have English as a 2nd, maybe 3rd language, and they can write a lot more accurately than you. Finally, if you're going to use txt/l337 speak and the like, you need to have a fairly good knowledge of the language - it's fairly impossible without knowing how the words are pronounced, and what numbers they sound like.

Just needed to get that out of my system ;) .

I see how people are still learning english, but stuff like the difference between "four" and "for" is very BASIC.

I don't want to see loads of "txt" speak on fora, I don't even use it much in IM conversations...whats the point? To me, people who use text speak are lazy and can't be bothered to write a few extra letters - what does that show?

You left the 't' out of the word thought. :p

It happens when you type fast. I usually don't spell check my posts because I am confident in my English skills, writing for two years will do that to you. That is, unless they are longer or I need to make sure there are no spelling errors. And when I do, I also have to read them through to make sure I didn't place a word that doesn't fit (were instead of we're, etc).

Mistakes happen. As long as one is consistent with proper English I'll be happy. But if I have to sit down, search Google for an Internet English dictionary, and then proceed to translate the message into readable form then I am annoyed.

EDIT

And if it does really matter that much to you.. then just don't read it, but don't criticize him just because he wrote "4" instead of "for", it is a free country you know..

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! What country? There are no countries on the internet, the closest thing to a country on the internet is a website. All concepts of freedom are defined by the webmasters and their staff. If WA says that everyone must speak German or be banned, guess what? If you don't know German, then you are banned or you're running fast to someone who does.

I can hear, "But he can't do that! I'm an America! This is a free country!" Try that in Iran, see how far you get. Americans have become so egotistical because of freedom that they think they are better than most anyone else. Guess what? We're not, we are just allowed to do more than most everybody else. Now, am I being cynical of Americans? Yes, I'm aiming this more at Americans who are lost in freedoms and don't even exercise the most basic of them. Do I hate America? Not at all. I hate arrogance and ignorance. So don't even tell me go and move to another country since I don't like it so much.

When was the last time you picked up a petition? Voiced your opinion on something that matters? Peacefully protested? If you can't answer then don't even start with the "This is a free country" maxims, they won't get you much of anything in my book. Others might rally behind you, but then you have the blind leading the blind.

It was a single digit, get over it. It's not like his whole entire post was riddled with it, it was more than obvious of what was meant. By being so pedantic you have broken more rules yourself by going completely off-topic over less than a byte of data. It's really disturbing, and it really seems to be the same single group of members who continue to bring up and attempt to enforce ridiculous intepretations of the rules and posting guidelines. By trying to police everything you are really just creating more problems, with the amount of moderators and advisors we have there isn't much we don't hear about, everything from singular posts to growing trends that need to be stopped or redirected...This is such a trend.

I see how people are still learning english, but stuff like the difference between "four" and "for" is very BASIC.

Given the context of this post, right down to the title of the forum it is in, I dare say it was rather advanced english really. To continue the theme of fun by being linguistically relaxed and even witty, in the true sense of the word, can be considered an excellent example of how text and context must be taken into account when writing nearly anything.

No more posting on this subject,
