Is there an easier way to add a drop shadow to an image rather than adding a table around it with little image parts or physically adding the shadow to the image.

You could try these ALA articles:
CSS Drop Shadows (http://www.alistapart.com/articles/cssdropshadows/)
CSS Drop Shadows II: Fuzzy Shadows (http://www.alistapart.com/articles/cssdrop2/)
Onion Skinned Drop Shadows (http://www.alistapart.com/articles/onionskin/)
Perhaps not easier, but at least without the abuse of layout tables and images that have no place in the content.

I used the onion skin thing. Works really well.

Yeah; although hindered by some superfuous markup, it does give the most sophisticated effect, and is very flexible at that.
Care to spoil us with an example of what you created...? :D
