WLAN connection foreseeing ?

hello there!

i am planning to get a dsl internet connection together with my neighbour, connecting one pc to the router via wlan. the thing is: if the signal is not strong enough, we'll have the higher priced, faster connection we chose for the two of us but only one will be able to use it.

in order to avoid this, it'd be nice to know BEFORE whether it is gonna work or not. i am kind of doubtfull because mobile phone reception within the building is lousy. any idea how i could find out?

if the connection is to be too low, breaking down from time to time, ... what is the best remedy (apart from ethernet direct cable connection)? connection through power net, wlan repeater, better wlan card on remote computer,... ?

I doubt you will get a steady, strong signalled connection from two different houses because of the wall which is in the way. I would say that wired ethernet cable is your best bet, although you don't really want to use it.

You will be able to pick up a connection from the house which doesn't have the router, but I don't know if you will get a decent connection for a steady amount of time, that's what I'm saying :)

thanks waezel, but is there a way to KNOW. measuring, ... ?

in fact, i can not use a cable, as you'd see it from outside the house and this is not allowed by the landlord (to make it simple).

Another option maybe......

Use external antenna's to transfer the signal from one house to the other. If the signal isnt strong enough you can then add a signal booster to them.

I have done this with a client of mine (a sporting complex) where the distance is about 35 metres and the connection is good.

We used the 802.11G frequency (54MPS). Although we did use Cisco Aironet equipment but I am certain that D-Link do external wireless antenna's which would surely be cheaper.

My neighbour (across the street) has an unprotected (i warned him a few times, even offered to setup protection) access point to which i can connect without any problems. So my outside housewalls and his outside housewalls inbetween the access point and my wifi card, exellent signal strength with no interruptions. So it could work for you too :thumbsup:
