Advertising in the net has been a hot topic here (in Finland) and it seems most offices, which are producing commercials and advertisements has no clue how to create proper ads in the net.

Most of the time ads are very annoying (either visually and/or audially), but this seems to be *cool* and I cant' understand why. Annoyance is many times a follow-up of designer's lack of understanding after usability & accessibility.

Anyway, I came with an idea to create very annoying ad with scripting and MS filters. Thus, following example is meant only for IE5.5+ with scripting enabled.

It's done in frustration and quickly, that's why all the coordinates of the layer aren't function like they should. When moving mouse to up, left or upper left/right, layer is positioned and moving nicely, so I encourage trying those directions. However, the basic principle of the idea (and annoyance) can be detected.

I thought adding some rumbling and fuzziness and then selling the script for medical company selling headache pills :)

Give some opinions/thoughts and links about nice commercials or advertisements in the Internet.

I would leave you site right then and there. I had no control over that, and it's a huge problem for me. You could be offering me a great deal, and I wouldn't have seen it because I looked at the mouse pointer and was forced to read that text. I emmidiately left the page because of that. I'm not saying that it isn't effective, but I just can't stand that we, the Internet users are being force fed this crap all of the time. And it's not only advertising, but most of it is irelevant to what we are surfing around for. If I am looking for a new component for my computer, I don't want to see an add for Viagra, you know what I mean? If it's relevent to the business, there are ways to advertise your products without being annoying.

That is unique so I think more people would click through than regular ads as long as it went off my mouse pointer after a few seconds. In the US pop up ads are so frequent that most people do not even read them and just try to close them as fast as possible. Newer browsers are preventing popup ads as well. I think ads that work well do not force the message. IMO the web site that integrates ads well is:
http://espn.go.com/main.html
and yes they do have that first popup window.

They whole neon flashing, classmates, credit card, punch the monkey, just won a million dollars just doesnt work. People put alot of thought into TV advertising I do not know why they would not for the web.

my ramblings...

I close popup ads before they even have a chance to finish loading! I don't care what they are selling, advertising, or giving away I don't want to see it. Same thing with spam emails.

Banner ads are bad enough but when you start getting ads that use layers for example, that cover the text you are trying to read or directly interfere with the reason I'm on the site to begin with that simple annoys me. Guess what if I'm annoyed I'm not going to want to buy your product or service. Your little script is definitly annoying and unless it goes away fairly quickly I'm gone!

the only ads that i have ever given any serious attention are the little text ads on google. when you're forced to condense your ad to just a few words on two lines, and you cut out all the hype, then it's a much better ad.

your toy is cool, but i wouldn't ever click on it, because i'm not interested in the flashy ads at all; a flashy ad almost always means, that the only way to sell the thing is to hype it, and that you couldn't get money for it, based only on its merits as a product.
