Image Slicing

I have read on several websites that images should be sliced as it increases loading time how ever I'm also coming across quite afew saying that it slows it down?

So which one is it?

eventually, it will slow it down. but what do you prefer, users waiting maybe 10 seconds for a whole big picture to load and display or sliced images which appear one by one and take maybe 12 seconds to load?

personally, speed has never been a reason for me to slice images. i slice them to get my layouts nice and liquid (on semi-liquid/jello more like)
