Yep you heard right!

A Microsoft blogger has published screenshots of what he claims is an upgrade to the infamous 'blue screen of death' which can appear when Windows crashes. Michael Kaplin, technical lead for Globalization Infrastructure, Fonts and Tools at Microsoft, reports in his blog that, as well as the blue screen, a red screen will be included that indicates a more serious problem. "I am not sure I would class the change as an improvement. The old message ['Windows cannot start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WINDOWSSystem32'] is one I understand since I know what the destructive operation was," he wrote.

"But if I did not have that knowledge then I would not know much about what was going on."

Kaplin was only able to access the screen after deliberately tweaking the registry settings on his PC. The discovery came as part of an attempt to set up a virtual PC to test the first beta of Microsoft's upcoming Longhorn operating system.

I'd like to see some Screens of Death coming in pastel colors. Much more relaxed.

I have had the red screen of death before, along with a black screen of death and the infamous blue screen of death...

Its a good thing M$ isn't working to aleviate the actual problems behind the screens of death, but instead is making them more exciting for the home and corporate users alike by changing colors...

Maybe they should also include a rainbow screen of death, and one that flashes through many colors.

I'm supposing they haven't removed the transparent screen of death. what? you've never seen a transparent screen of death? of course you have! it's the last screen you see before windows just goes discreetly nuts, chews through your computers most important files and then freezes never to be restarted again without a firm format and reinstall.

they could have chosen a darker blood red though, to remind the user he's really stuffed now :D

Maybe instead of a color a pic of bill gates riding a pwnasaurus across the screen with random error numbers that don't mean anything to anyone. I would buy that version of windows, just to be entertained before freaking out.

...You are aware that it is possible to change the colour of the background and text on those screens yourself, arent you? :p
