transfering data to another page

when a user clicks on a certain hyperlink I would like to be able to transfer data to an exsisting web pages input/text box.

ex> say someone is looking for a part for a car and there is already a website with a database to look up these parts (if you know the part number). My website would break these parts into subsystems and partnames. Then when the link is clicked it will automatically put the part number in the existing webpages text field.

It would be a job for a server side language wouldn't it? PHP etc make that easy because you can send variable with a link to the next page.
