Xbox 360 will be even more of a PC hybrid than the current-gen Xbox and will feature an interface similar to that of Windows Media Centre. According to Microsoft boss Bill Gates, who was speaking yesterday at a meeting of business journalists, the machine - which is expected to feature wireless controllers and a detachable hard drive - will be as much of a digital entertainment hub as it will be a games console.
"If you're used to the Media Centre menu, when you use this Xenon you'll see a menu a lot like that that lets you get photos, TV, music and all those different things," said Gates, who also spoke of improved communications tools for making multiplayer online gaming more accessible.
Big Bill (lol!) went on talk about Microsoft's ambitions to become the leading console manufacturer with the next generation of hardware. "Our goal in the last generation was to be in the game. We came out of this round a strong number two."
However, analysts at Wedbush Morgan Securities, believe that "many investors have misinterpreted the launch of Xbox 360 as the beginning of the next generation and expect rapid sales growth in 2006. In contrast, we expect the launch of Sony's PS3 to mark the beginning of the next cycle and think that rapid sales growth will not materialise until 2007."
