I have a domain name somewhere. They want 9.95 to renew.
Can I easily switch it to someone else and renew it cheaper?
Any ideas on who is cheap and good for domain names?

I've heard good things about GoDaddy (http://www.godaddy.com).

There are quite a few good cheap companies out there which will register or renew your domain name quite cheaply - http://www.123-reg.co.uk/ are pretty good :)

So if I got a message from my current domain provider that in 60 days my domain will expire -- I can just go to one of the above sites and transfer it and that will renew it as well? Anything else that I need to be aware of?

Yeeah you could do that. However who would you have as your host? the same company which registered your domain or two seperate companies?

2 separate companies --
so it there any harm in waiting until it is a few days before the domain name renewal to transfer it?
Any potential fees that I should be aware of?

Some companies charge to transfer hosting or to change DNS servers for a site between companies.....

I would renew it a week or so before it comes up for renewal, if you want complete peace of mind ;)

thanks -- who would charge - the old comapany or the new one.
I want to ask them.

Just my two cents, but if you like the service of the company you're with I'd stick with them... at $9.95 a year it's not a ridiculous price. The cheapest I've seen are only around a dollar less.

£15 Jamie, bloody hell!

I pay £4.98 for 2 years, at 1&1 (http://www.1and1.co.uk/)... a third of your price :D .

I've heard talk (starting quite a while back) saying that 1&1 charge registrants to move their domains away.
Is that true (now)? Was it ever true?

I have several .uk domains registered with 123reg(.co.uk), who charge around £6 for 2 years. Slightly more than 1&1, but there's no fee for transferring them away.
I always register new domains, even .co.uk domains, with GoDaddy. I already had several .com domains with them, and since they started offering .co.uk as well, I register all new .co.uk domains with them as well.
I'll be transferring the domains currently at 123reg over to GoDaddy when they come up to renewal time.
I prefer to have all the domains in one place and GoDaddy have always given an outstanding and faultless service. That's as well as their pleasing prices.
They aren't the absolute cheapest, but they are well priced and I trust them and their services 100% - and that's worth paying a little bit more for, imho.

BTW Ollie, I pay VAT on top of the £15 / 2 years. so that makes £23.50 (round abouts)!
