You can use the recovery console from your bootable windows xp cd...that will repair any installation of windows xp which is dodgy, although I don't use '98 much now :)

O..and if you have '98 and XP on the same partition, make sure that the drive is formatted with FAT32 and not NTFS, as Windows 98 can not read the NTFS file system. I personally recommend that they are installed on different partitions.

Roger that, the recovery CD is your only way to go.

Failing that you could have a word with whoever sold you the PC - that is if it's still under warranty and also if they're nice people, worth a shot.

If not then you'll have to purchase a new OS.

Now have you heard of Fedora Core 3.... ;)

Although I suppose 98 is still worth it's salt in some areas, I wouldn't bother putting it on a machine as a dual boot system....XP does me fine, although I want to do a dual boot on my machine between server2k3 and XP :p

I too like having a dual boot system - especially on two seperate hard drives in case one goes pop.

XP & FC3 for me at the moment - although i can't honestly remember the last time i touched XP (apart from at work - yuk!)

Heh....I'm still downloading redhat fedora 3 ISOs... - done disk 1, disk 4 and the recovery disk.

bearded, I assume you have Windows 98 on C: and may be Winxp on D: or E:
C: contains some critical files which Win xp needs to boot. When you formatted that partition, you lost those files. They are Boot.ini, NTdetect.com and ntldr.sys. without these files, XP won't boot. The files also have to be located within the first sectors of your hard disk so just copying them and putting them back might not work. I suggest you use the recovery console and run "fixboot" and "fixmbr" commands.
