View Full Version : installing win 2K from hard drive?

So I currently have win 98 installed onto my computer, and I have an external usb cd-rom drive. When I pop in the win 2k upgrade cd I get to a point where the computer needs to restart and then it can no longer recognize the cd drive. Therefore I was wondering if there was a way to still proceed in the upgrade, or somehow get win 2k to upgrade solely from the hard drive? I thought I remember reading some website about doing that... but haven't been able to find it since.

heh...I've never seen anyone trying to install 2k off a USB CD drive....honestly
I would try and install it off a internal CD drive - I take it you mean a desktop computer - as USB drives require windows to work.
However, I do believe there is a way to install windows 2000 off a hard disk - another volume maybe, but I've never done it.

You might be able to turn on legacy USB support in your BIOS. It is what allows like your USB keyboard to work before your OS loads, during that interim the BIOS handles the USB support.
That might fix your problem; and I take it that you can't boot off of this USB CD-ROM?
Depending on the age of the computer there might be a BIOS update that will enhance the USB support. My computer which is a year old now detects all my USB mass storage devices when it POSTs and I can boot off of them if I want.
If none of that works, you can try installing from the hard drive. I assuming you are doing an upgrade, you could just copy the I386 folder from the CD to your hard drive and then when it asks for the CD again after it reboots, you can see if you can specify the path and if you can, just point it at where you copied the files.

There are two ways.
1. Create a folder on you HDD. Advised to use the root of drive C: or D: Name it something short like Win2k. Copy all the files from the Win2k CD into the folder. Run set up from there
2. From within Win 98, run setup from the Win2k CD. You'll get to a place where you'll see Advance Options. Click the button and select "Copy all files from the windows CD." This will enable setup to complete without the CD.
Hope this helps

I want to do a fresh install of w2k over w2k and I was wondering if copying the files to the HD will work?

I wouldnt have thought so because it wouldn't work if you are installing it from the same partition onto the same partition, as you would need to format it. However it *might* work if you have it on a different physical partition or drive.
