How would you guys explain HTML to non programers in plain english simple enough that a 12 year old will understand?

Personally, I wouldn't. But, if I had to, well I'd probably use "plain english".

err it all depends on the situation i think, maybe you could explain more what you need to do. I don't think it would be that hard, 12 year olds are smart.

LOL.... the name says it all. But explaining HTML to most adults is harder than explaining HTML to 12 yr olds... Better just get the book.

I would explain HTML and CSS by telling them to forget about content but how you want the pages to look, such as:
Background color.
Text color, font type, font size and position.
Head lines color, font type, font size and position.
Image size position.
Once they understand that they can add content.

Tell them HTML is used to describe the structure of a document. Nothing more.

Give them this (http://www.lissaexplains.com/) link. The person who made the website was allready starting at the age of 11 with html so why should it be hard to any 12 year old ?

They may have started young, but that doesn't mean they're doing things the best way. Look at the source to their page. They may explain things well, but most people learn this stuff by looking at how others did it.

I have my favorite set of basic html tutorials at

I'm afraid it's useful for 12-year-old or not. :D
