Why does multimedia support suck?

What multimedia specifcally are you refering to? I don't think multimedia has bad support but that's not really down to the browsers. Flash has great support and so does quicktime, wmp lacks abit, hopefully with the rapid development of Internet2 (broadband standard) things will improve vastly and we will see seemless streaming media.

Just stuff in general: vector graphics, a/v, timed media, UI-agents, etc... embedded objects have always been sketchy, but I guess that's all too complicated and expensive for universal implementation. ;)
