keeping writing colour when disabling a form button

when i disable a form button in one of my javascripts (by using document.form.submit.disabled = true; ) the writing of the button greys out and becomes hard to read. is there anyway i can disable a form while leaving the writing a normal colour)? in NS6 it works by adding document.form.submit.style.color="black" but it doesnt work for IE - so any suggestions anyone?

that would be my only guess, and if it's not working, i'm thinking it's not possible.

I agree with john I don't think you are able to change the color or bgColor of a disabled button.
