define "mock up", maybe put in some lipsum for the "content" to see how it looks?

ditto.

what exactly are you asking?

PS/PSP/Paint etc seem to be alright for getting the general jist of a page layout if that's what your asking.

pen and paper work nice as well ;)

... and are a lot cheaper, and don't need a hefty PC to run on.

Of course you rarely can reach the level of detail with pen and paper that you could with a graphics editor, but for a general mock-up of the layout it should do just fine, and works a lot quicker to boot.

I started out doing it all with pencil and paper but then discovered how much better it was to use the graphics editor. Using something like Photoshop or other graphics editor you can basically design the page exactly how it will look which is great for working with clients because you can give them screenshots before ever having to write a line of code. That way if they want any changes you can change the graphic instead of redoing code.

Photoshop or something alike is probably the easiest, but also costs $600...

Yeah, photoshop or the like is really a nice way to do it. At work it used to be where the artist designed the thing and then I'd take the PSD and slice it up and code it to make it look as close as I could to the photoshop. And on top of that the artist was also a web guy so he had a good idea on what was possible and what wasn't so I was always able to get the stuff to look pretty similar to what he designed.

Sometimes I draw by hand, and sometimes I design layouts in PS before coding them. However, there have been times when I started coding right out at sea:p - without plans:eek:
