Is there any way to load images in a particular order?

Is there any way to load images in a particular order? For instance, could I have the browser load a larger image last?

Also, is it possibile for a webpage to tell what speed connection the user has and redirect them to a page depending on their connection (similar to monitor resolutions)?

I don't know how browsers handle image loading by default, but I would assume it's as they are encountered in the source.
