I am about to take on the website maintenance for someone, and we realized recently that we have a problem. a website created for him a couple of years ago, that he thought was down since the company who created and hosted it went out of business, is still online, and appearing right next to his current website when searches are done.

We tried calling the origional company, and his contact, but the numbers have been disconnected. I eventually through reverse lookups and the such found the phone number for the person who created it, and they said that they couldn't take down the site because they had sold the server. Problem is, we can't find the people who now own the server.

Point is, we need to get this website offline fast since it is interfering with his business. Anyone got any ideas?

Set up a few hundred linux boxes to flood ping the site. Once their bandwidth goes through the roof, they'll be contacting you! :D

Seriously, I think you're on the right path. Just keep looking up who owns what IPs and trace it back through ISPs. If it's on the web, there's an ISP that's giving them bandwidth. It can take a while to track down who owns what though.

Hi,

Take the domain name of the older site and go to a DN registrant site like Network Solutions or GKG.net and run a WhoIs. Some of these companies will allow you to see the Name servers that the domain name is assigned to. The Name servers will be the hosts of that domain... and you can contact them.
