i am currently learning ASP.NET and to work in the .NET environment. I am currently using Windows XP ... should I migrate to Windows Server 2003? or is it a totally unnecessary thing to upgrade a home PC to Windows Server 2003?

You dont need Win 2003 server. That is an unnecessary expense. However, bear in mind that if you have Win XP Home edition that you cannot have IIS and so Visual Studio will hiccup. There used to be a workaround that many of us used but with Service Pack 2 MS fixed it so that workaround no longer works. :( So if you have Win XP Home then you will need to use something like the Asp.Net Web Matrix which can be found here (http://www.asp.net/)

If you want to use Visual Studio.Net then upgrade to Win XP Pro or install Win 2K Pro.

Windows Server 2003 costs around Rs. 70 in my country .. that is equivalent to $1 ... it must sound outrageous to you people but yes thats the price ...(its pirated, of course:))...

And if you use Pirated software then you should never complain if someone steals from you because that is what you are doing, stealing the work of others. Yes MS is a big corporation and Gates is very wealthy but he has made many programmers a good living also.

you will get serial-headhackes with 2003 server .. a very simple xp home works fine or windows 2000 or xp pro

you will get only problems with 2003 server .. rights problems

net works fine and alone

Visual Studio is good, but expensive. However, you can get it pretty cheap on a academc licence, but I don't know if you would be able to get that.

Web Matrix is a highly cut down free version of visual studio. I have it, but haven't really use it much as I like playing with PHP rather than ASP...

anyhow, my two pennies:D

you'll get a better free tool than web matrix here >> http://www.icsharpcode.net/OpenSource/SD/

it has also a few feature visual studio has not
a vb --> C# / C# --> vb converter for exemple

$1 for pirated software.. how retarded is that.. you shouldnt pirate software but if ur gunna at least do it for free :confused:

dont put ws2k3 on if you want to use it as more than a server, a lot of stuff wont run on a server os (i have xp pro on my dev comp and ws2k3 as a web server)

i use crimson editor, its a free editor but its not an IDE
