Well - I'd like to see lots more graphics :p
Seriously though - if you made your content area the same width as your header, that would help :)

seriously though - you can have a graphics free website, while at the same time giving a wee nod to aesthetic sensibilities, for instance http://readmetoo.co.uk/
:)

OK, I think it's time to redo the CSS completely...

Dude, be careful! You gotta keep an eye out for those chnages... ;)
But seriously (I'm slowly getting sick of sitting at work... :( ): even your great example, Eric Meyer (http://www.meyerweb.com/), has refined his design somewhat, and I think it's an improvement.
You don't need a big whopping image as masthead; often, a cutout that doesn't completely reveal what the image is about works much more efectively. Look for colour and texture rather then a picture.
Also, do something about the retro, saturated blue; try some darkened blue, greyish blue, aqua blue, greenish blue, whatever!
Maybe you could cut a thin strip out of the cloudy blue sky of your masthead image and use that as a heading background; just an idea.

Dude, be careful! You gotta keep an eye out for those chnages... ;) WEll, I was tired and typing awfully quick...
As for the other suggestions, as I said, I do need to redo the CSS to allow me to change things more easliy... The photos, I don't know what'll happen to them, although I'm certain I'll do something to them...
