could somebody give me some insight on how it is web pages climb the ranks of search engines? I don't understand how you can get placed higher. I thought search engines rated your page using bots and you were ranked accordingly.

Different search engines rank your pages differently, but here are some of the more important factors:

Clean code;
Good content;
Lots of links to your site;
Lots of external links to other sites;
Updated often.
