Restore image after it's been cropped without access to original source?

I heard/saw Howard Stern's interview with Cat Schwartz of Tech TV in which she said that people were able to restore the original images just from the cropped ones she had put online. How is that possible? A program? A hacker?

I don't know of any way that you could possibly recreate an entire image from a cropped version of that image, without having the original image to begin with.....Maybe they were both drunk and one of them said it in between throwing salami at a midget stripper's ***....
