So I keep trying to boot from a windows 2000 professional CD -- and it's not taking.

When I started up windows it gave me an error:
...following file is missing or corrupt: \WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMced

It says to pop in the win2k disk and press r at start up. However, everytime I press r, it just sits there with the little bar to load windows and does nothing (I waited over 30minutes).

What do I need to boot this pc off of a disk?

Seems as if the memory I installed was the problem.

The Dell guys told me to buy two 256mb PC 133 168pin DIMM memory for this little optiplex gx100... but third party sites say PC 100. God...

Hello,

you may have already done this / realised this but when you boot up the pc (with the disk in the drive) have you pressed F8/F10 (or whatever button for your PC) to enter either the boot menu or the set-up menu.
This is where you can change the boot order and have CD 1st in the boot order as it sounds like it still has HDD as No.1 in the boot order.

512MB sounds like WAY to much for an old chipset like the one the optiplex uses, 64Mb, 96Mb or 128MB is the norm in my experience with them.

hope this helps.

Yeah, I finally figured that one out -- thank you:)

...and that was pretty funny  -- it's ok, my G4 overshadows it on my desktop anyhow...

That shouldn't matter typically. The 133 stuff would just run at a lower speed than its maximum is all.

Hmmm... then did I install something wrong? As soon as I took that memory out and put the old stuff back in, it booted just fine with no errors. Is there something else I need to do to get it to work, lord knows I'd love to since I can't take it back now :)

Thats weird, but it is a Dell, they probably did something strange to it.
