You'll probably get a lot of suggestions on this one, but here's a few to get you started with your quest:

I can only recommend what I'm familiar with. I have used www.generalhosting.com for over two years and I am very happy with them. The basic plan starts at $7.95/mo (around $95/year). With that you get...
75 MB disk space
Microsoft Windows Server
3000 MB/mo. of data transfer, $0.08 per Mb over 3000
5 self-manageable mailboxes
www.yourcompany.com
Unlimited FTP access
Microsoft FrontPage2000-2002 extensions
ASP - ASP.NET
Your CGI directory; PERL library
SSL Secucre order form
Detailed web usage statistics & access to raw log files
ODBC for Microsoft ACCESS (DSN or DSN-less)
PHP 4; mySQL; SSI; Phyton; Subwebs
WAP-wml/wireless sites
$0.30 per Mb on any overage storage beyond 75 MB
FREE SET UP/TRANSFER for 1 domain name
2nd domain name: add $45 set up fee
.INFO, international and other domain extensions ok

Here's my theory:
All <£20/month hosts suck with no exception, the level of suckiness can be adjusted to your needs however.
Most >£20/month hosts are decent and you're unlikely to get burned or messed about with.

I have a >£20/month server btw ;)

I've used the same hosting company for over 3 years. I started off with the smallest package available ($7.95/month) and as my needs expanded I upgraded to the reseller package ($39.95/month). I upgraded out of necessity, not because I was unhappy with what I was getting for $7.95/month.
Who do you think makes all of the generic food at the grocery store? Answer: The same companies that make the name brands. Rather than go on a tangent about an abstract analogy, I'll simple say this...
A smart consumer can get everything that they need for less if they are willing to do a little research (which thickandthin is obviously doing by starting this post)

Indeed but then the main thing - for me anyway - with hosts is support and maintenance, this is always far better the more $$$ you dish out.

We're just going to have to agree to disagree then! You can only speak of your experiences and I of mine. To say that more is better is too vast of a generalization for me. I'm very happy with what I got (including support and maintenance) for a measly $7.95/month.

I'm really happy with my service, for $9.95 a month I get 7 gigs monthly transfer and 100 megabites of space at Dreamhost (http://www.dreamhost.com/rewards.cgi?bethh). I've been with them for three years and customer service has always responded within hours. I don't just recommend them to strangers but to friends as well.

I use ICDSoft (http://www.icdsoft.com/hosting.php) (admittedly for only a month). They give you 333Mb space and all the other stuff you can see on their web site. They answered my email within half and hour. I filled out the credit card details late one night and the site was available when I turned on my computer the next morning. At $60 a year it's very cheap compared to what I've seen. For another $5 a year you get a www.yourname.xxx domain as well (you just have to pay another $10 to keep it if you move elsewhere).
I was sceptical, as most people would be of anything 'too cheap'. But reading reviews like this (http://www.webhostingratings.com/plans/ICDSoft.html) convinced me.
Good luck and let us know which one you go for...
