Hi all, just a header graphic at the moment, but what do you think?
Needs some typographical tweaks, like correcting the kerning etc, but is there anything else? Anything glaringly crap or wrong with it?
All opinions and criticisms would be greatly appreciated
Kindest Regards,
Gary

bababababa...
I'm lovin' it!
Nice pixel-pushing Gary :) . I'm not to sure about the twiddly bits at the side though; although they're nice, they're a bit weak.
Good job  .

Yeah Gary - I like that..good work! Are you going to appeal for donations and offer a external link to a charity or something to raise money for Band Aid or something? That would be a good idea....

Thanks Jamie,
The site is actually going to promote and sell limited edition, signed prints by a well known ultra-realism wildlife artist from Canada. 100% of the proceeds will be going to African conservation projects (Gorillas, Elephants and Lions in particular) and also to educational projects in Africa.

I've been seeing that 'old paper' theme a lot lately. Doesn't make it bad, just means that it didn't make me go 'Oooh'. I think the twisty things look good, but may look bad when you add the rest, depending on whether or not you recycle them elsewhere.
Another thing I noticed: It might make sense to use a painting of a lion instead of a photo ;)
Not sure if I have 'heavyweight' status, but I think it looks good.

Just a thought:
When I cover up the squiggly lines and just look at the paper in the middle, I see one design. When I cover up the paper and just look at the squiggly lines, I see another design. You've done some good work here, but it's looking like two designs pushed into one. The paper and the squigglies don't mesh. Pick one or the other. I think the paper is the better of the two and would be even better if it was a developed idea (maybe even the type of paper the artist uses).

Thanks guys  Astute feedback, as always :)
AW: Yeah we've all seen the 'paper' thing a lot lately, but if the glove fits, so to speak, why not wear it? :). I'm not necessarly trying to produce something innovative - just something *nice* that reflects the aims and content of the project. I'm after a design that makes you think: 'nice', but the paintings make you go 'ooh!'. That's why I didn't use one of the paintings in the graphic really, didn't want to distract.
Todd: The squiggly bits - Maybe they don't work as yet, but the idea was to introduce a bit of 'majesty' to the theme, to contrast the dusty 'safari' (not the browser!) look of the header. Inspiration came from some old reggae records I have in my collection (hey I'm a fan of good music :) ) A lot of the record sleeves use the device of contrasting African imagery with a kind of Regal, semi-gothic/regency/classical style decoration, if you see what I mean? I always thought it was a fascinating contrast.
An antidote to the percieved image of Africa being a dusty poverty stricken 'good place for ex-colonialists to go on safari' continent I suppose. I'd like to get away from promoting that image in this design if possible.
Anyhows, I'm waffling now :o
Thanks to everyone esle too
Kindest Regards,
Gary
