Pretty simple for a Mac user even:) -- however, I have this one computer that won't let me do it. Normally I just select local printer from the wizard, uncheck the auto install, and go from there... yet this PC has the 'local' selection grayed out, and won't allow me to select anything but the network printing option... which is not what I want. How do I get the local option NOT grayed out so I can continue? Thanks windows guys

What operating system? Is it connected to a domain?

Are there any policies in play?

No, these users have full policy of everything except administrative -- could that be a possibility?

It is possible depending upon how much of the administrative functions have been denied...

worst case scenario:

I have a vbscript that will create a local IP printer. you just tell it what port to create it on (interface on the comp), the printer name, the printer port (interface on the printer), and the printer driver.

of course...if it's a rights issue.......the script won't run...

That's the likely problem. Your security policy does not allow non administrators to add or modify printers. It's the same in the company where i work. If you were working here, i'd have logged on your pc and added it for you :D

Sage -- bingo. I logged in as the administrator and it worked... sorry about that, we don't have to do that on a Mac:) I appreciate the help everybody, seems like I need a little more PC knowledge from you all

Not one hundred percent true there boss... You can add and modify printers as a Power User unless through the policies this has been denied...

Besides, policies deeper than an administrative set and a user set can get downright disasterous if not implemented correctly... :(
