I'm trying to reinstall windows 98 onto my computer but I have Windows XP on it. Now the problem is is that everytime I try to click on the Windows Explorer in XP it gives me an error messege and sais soemthing like:

Error Signature:
AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2600.0 ModName:helper.dll ModVer:.0.0.0.0 Offset:0006ff01

So I cant even start explorer to copy a new command.com file into the congg folder. So when ever I try to boot from the windows 98 disk it sais that the command interperter is corrupt (c:\coomand.com)

if anyone could help me with this problem it would be great. thanks

You need to start fresh. Unless you are installing a dual boot situation, you need to completely get rid of XP then install 98. When you attempted to install 98 it dropped some things in that now are conflicting with the existing OS. I wish I had better news for you :(

There are three options here.

1 If you want to dualboot, i advise you to boot with a 98 startup diskette, and install win 98 on another partition. After the installation, boot into 98 and then insert your XP cd. Install and when asked to upgrade, select new installation. You'll get to a place where you'll see Advanced Options. Click the button and make sure you select "Choose installation partition during setup". The computer will restart after copying the files from CD. During the installation process you'll be asked to type the installation partition. Make sure you type the path where XP is currently installed. All things being equal, you'll have a dual boot situation and your winXP will be back to normal.

2 If you want to have Win 98 alone on your PC, boot with a Win98 startup diskette. When you get into Command prompt, delete the windows folder and the program files folder, then proceed with your 98 installation.

3 If you want to cancel and go back to your original XP, just reinstall winxp making sure you install into the original XP partition. Everything should work correctly.

Revert back if you still have issues. Cheers
