If this is in the wrong thread my apologies.

Every time I close Internet explorer my home page gets reset to “about: blank”. The source doe not wants to be changed. What can I do to get rid of this problem?

any sugections will help;
i do have hijack this and it does not fix the problem
spy bot, adaware, mcacfee, avg virus scan. do NOT pick any thing up.

http://www.mozilla.org They'll fix ya right up. ;)

Otherwise, after I run all that crap and the culprit still isn't found, I'll usually just whip out my trusty Windows XP cd and nuke the !@#$er.

If Adaware or Spybot can't find it, the best thing to do would be to reformat, but if you don't want to do that couldn't you try to reinstall Internet Explorer? Or just use firefox...

Sounds like your PC has been infected by a BHO (Browser Helper Object)

To fix go into Internet options control panel, then go to programs tab and click "manage add ons". You want to disable most of the "Browser Helper Objects" in this list.

The only useful BHO I have ever needed in IE is AcroIE (Acrobat Reader plug in). Of course if you switch to Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org) you'll have none of these problems...

The same happened to me recently so i used the helper remover in spy killer because i have never found the manager in IE.

Even though, i do still only use IE for some development and i am generally using firefox and i would reccomend it for better reliability to work properly!

Sounds familiar to what happened to me not that long ago, only difference is on top of not being able to run pretty much anything, even in safe mode, becuase all the sudden it was an invalid 16 bit thingy I was completely blocked out of my registry and was told that 'This feature has been disable by The adminstrator' when Im the only know who uses this pc, it jsut kept worsening, soon all of my spyware/virus scanners were shutting down after 5 secs of operation...the only thing I could do was reformat, it all started with that same exact warning you are getting that you put in your last post.

EDIT: If you dont want to leave IE like me, because im a coward, you can use Maxthon. Maxthon is pretty much a take on Mozilla and Firefox with tabbed browsing addfilters and script blockers while still being IE. The site for it is www.maxthon.com I belive, if not just google maxthon

try searching on google for these two programs:

CW Shredder
BHO Demon

These can fix pretty much any problem with IE

Seeing as how you've scanned the system with adaware and AVG (assuming they are the latest versions) your system will be free of viruses and spyware. I'm 95% certain your problem is being caused by a BHO, so try BHO demon first and disable all helper objects it finds.

Failing that, all I can suggest is pressing CTRL + ALT + DEL and looking at the list of processes that are running. If you dont recognise the name of a program listed there, then search for it in google - example "lsass.exe" or "ctfmon.exe" etc etc - and it will tell you if it is part of the system or not

If your wanting to reformat it Thats the eaiset way, for me at least, just pick up a boot disk from bootdisk.com and put your bd onto a floppy, insert the newly made BD into your floppy drive and restart your comp and 'it should' start up in dos after a few minutes assuming of course your floppy is first in the boot line

I doubt it was anyone trying to hack you, It could have been spyware, or a virus, jsut becasue you have scanners doesnt mean its not possible. Where theres a way, someone will exploit it. Perhaps getting a firewall like ZoneLabs Zone Alarm would help keep out hackers and rouge programs.

Wish i'd seen this thread earlier, i could have saved you from some trouble. We had the same problem here and here's the resolution

"16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem
path to the program you are trying to run
C:\WINNT\system32\config.nt or autoexec.nt or command.com. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications"

The resolution is shown below:

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, type the following commands at a command prompt to expand the Autoexec.nt, Command.com, and Config.nt files from the Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003 installation CD-ROM to the Windows\System32 or Winnt\System32 folder. Press ENTER after you type each command. When you type these commands, replace cd-rom with the letter for your CD-ROM drive, drive_letter with the drive letter for your system partition, and system_root with the name of your Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003 folder (this is typically either Winnt or Windows). After you type these commands, restart your computer:

Expand d:\i386\config.nt_ c:\winnt\system32\config.nt

expand d:\i386\autoexec.nt_ c:\winnt\system32\autoexec.nt

expand d:\i386\command.co_ c:\winnt \system32\command.com

NOTE:

1. d:\ is your CD-ROM drive letter (Change as necessary)
2. If c:\winnt\system32\config.nt does not work, try c:\winnt\system32\config, autoexec, command, etc.

That fixes that problem
