View Full Version : Softice 4.05 on WinXP

Alright, down to business. I have constantly searched Google and all I ever see is "you can't use Softice on XP".
I think that's a bunch of crap. I have Windows XP Home Edition SP1 and have installed Softice 4.05 along with numerous so-called patches which I have found, but to no avail. Every time windows starts a dos prompt quickly flashes saying something like:
C:\>net start ntice
System Error 127 Cannot start service for some reason...
(and the reason is NOT because serviec ntice doesn't exist, so what the heck is that?)

Yes, I have read that article before. As I said, I have thoroughly used Google. Somebody out there must have been able to do it, right?

OK, I got SoftIce 4.05 running on my XP SP1 machine after installing DriverStudio 2.7. Now I've got a new problem: When press Ctrl+D the screen gets screwed up and I can't move my mouse. I assume the mouse problem is because it's a USB Mouse and the Softice doumentation said that a USB Mouse won't work under 4.05, but my touchpad mouse doesn't work either. Also, the documentation said something about changing display drivers to correct a screwed up display, but I can't figure it out. Does anybody know how to correct these problems?
yeah I'm getting a similar problem with DriverStudio 3.1 (SoftICE 4.3.1)..on Windows XP home Sp2..when I set softice to start automatically at startup it doesnt. Then when I start it manually by clicking "Start SoftICE", my computer apperently freezes - mouse and keyboard appear to stop responding but pressing Ctrl+D will popup the softice window and softice works actually but I cannot find how to unfreeze my computer. :( any ideas?

Hi, don't really know much about softice but i got a quick suggestion. Does softice change your display resolution to 640 x 480 px before it runs? if it doesn't, then try and do that. Change your display resolution to 640 x 480 and 256 color mode before running softice. Might work, just a suggestion.

Hey! I finally got a response from Numage technical support after months of waiting and their response actually worked! Of course, there are about 20 steps you have to follow to get it working, but it can work. I can only remember one of them off hand (I will post the rest soon): Open up symbol loader with Softice active -> Settings-> Initialization Settings
See where it says 'Video Memory'? That number is set for 640x480 at 16 bit resolution! Change it to 3145 for enough memory to hold 1024x768 at 32 bits. This alone didn't solve my problem, but it is one of the steps.

The following is a list of things that make SoftICE video work on
different
configurations of video card and SotICE versions.
Reboot and try again after each step.
1) The correct settings for SoftICE Video (in the SoftICE Display
Adapter
Setup) are Standard Vga with Universal Video Driver box checked. Even
if
your card was detected. At minimum you should run the display adapter a
second time to verify that the correct data was written during testing.
2) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Siwvid make
sure
that the entry for start value is set to 0.
3) Some cards do not support the direct draw system. The correct
settings
for these in SoftICE Video (in the SoftICE Display Adapter Setup) are
Standard Vga with Universal Video Driver box NOT checked.
4) Try checking the value the video memory in Symbol Loader | Edit |
SoftICE
Initialization Settings | Video Memory It needs to be set to a value
that
will hold your the contents of your screen. To determine this multiply
the
pixel width * pixel height * pixel depth. Pixel depth is: 256 color =
1.
High color (16 bit = 2, True color 24 or 32 bit = 4). Example: 1024 X
768 @
32 bit = 3145 KB.
5) Make sure the value in
\REGISTRY\Machine\System\ControlSet001\Services\<YourCard>\Device0\Installed
DisplayDriver matches the one in
\REGISTRY\Machine\System\ControlSet\Services\NTice\InstalledDisplayDriver.
6) Using regedit go to
\REGISTRY\Machine\System\ControlSet\Services\NTice
and add the following items.
DWORD DoInt2dPatch 1
DWORD Int2dLocation 0
Reboot TWICE and try again.
7) Using regedit go to
\REGISTRY\Machine\System\ControlSet\Services\NTice
and add the following item. Then try the values specified below and
reboot.
DWORD IsInt2dRVA 1
8) Try a value of 0xe422d in the Int2dLocation location (Normally
works on
XP SP0).
9) Try a value of 0x88920 in the Int2dLocation location (Normally
works on
XP SP1).
10) Try a value of 0xbe67c in the Int2dLocation location (Normally
works on
Win 2K SP3).
11) For W2k sp4, remove the IsInt2dRVA value altogether and change the
Int2dLocation value to 0x804c2b95.
12) For W2k server sp4, remove the IsInt2dRVA value altogether and
change
the Int2dLocation value to 0x804cE030.
13) Do the Int2dLocation location patch manually.
Remove value for IsInt2dRVA if it exists.
Set value for DoInt2dPatch to 1.
Set value for Int2dLocation to 0.
Go to start->programs->driverStudio->Debug->Symbol Retriever. Use add
to add
ntoskrnl. Check load symbols into softice. Get symbols. Open a command
prompt and hit alt-enter. Then hit ctrl-d. You should be in softice.
Once in
softice type "s MmLoadSystemImage L d88 85,c0,0f,84" You should see a
matched pattern at..... You need the address from that matching. For
example
8059064D. Write that down. Open regedit and got to
\REGISTRY\Machine\System\ControlSet\Services\NTice
Set value for Int2dLocation to that matched address.
If none of these items work please send the following information:
1) The export reg file for the
\REGISTRY\Machine\System\ControlSet\Services\NTice
2) The export reg file for the
\REGISTRY\Machine\System\ControlSet\Services\SiwVid
3) run msinfo32.exe and send the resulting nfo file.
4) Send a copy of WINICE.DAT under winnt\system32\drivers
5) Add "/bootlog /SOS" options in \BOOT.INI, reboot, send
winnt\NTBTLOG.TXT
to us.
6) Set SoftICE to start at boot mode, reboot. Run symbol loader
immediately
after Windows is up. Go to file ->save softice history and send that.

I've read that fro softice 3.1 to work on winXP SP2 the symbols have to be downloaded using symbol retriever and the symbol retriever is the one that will convert the files to *.NMS format...
I downloaded the package for SP2...about 120mb...but I did not use the symbol retriever..I just double the file after downloading and it unpack itself..to a dir in
c:\windows\symbols....knowing that for it to be used by softice it should be converted to *.NMS format which is suppose to be the job for the symbol loader to convert the *.pdb file and other files to *.nms format.. which is done after downloading...but I downloaded the symbol as a package so I tried specifying the path for the unpacked files which is still *.pdb format..I tried using symbol retriever to convert it to *.NMS format but it does not convert files..now heres the problem...HOW do I CONVERT the files ( symbols ) which I downloaded from the microsoft site to *.NMS format so softice could use this files..
thanks alot..hope to hear a resp. soon...
Hi,
I want to confirm the message written by DOLESCLE:
...I tried using symbol retriever to convert it to *.NMS format but it does not convert files..now heres the problem...HOW do I CONVERT the files ( symbols ) which I downloaded from the microsoft site to *.NMS format so softice could use this files...
I used the super-new DriverStudio 3.2 that appeared in several places at last week, and I has the same problem: SymbolRetriever doesn't do its work ! What can be done ?
Please, help us !

to ZVI...I solve the problem by using the symbol retriever to download, since specifying the path on my drive doesn't seem to work..so I connected to the internet..loaded the .PDB file about 6 or 7 of them..then fired up the symbol retriver..
Softice is now functioning..but alot of bugs are crawling from this version..
there's the problem of a freezing screen, sometimes it even hangs up the computer..when using BPX showwindow. keyboard not funtioning after using the BPX showwindow..but hey it's a beta version what can u expect..hope they find a solution to this soon..
.and also what's the substitute for HMEMCPY??
where did you download..version 3.2 can u post the link.
DOLESCLE, hi,
1. Here is DS3.2 -
http://download.int3.net/debuggers/win_debug
2. You must get for \ROOT\System32\drivers
ftp://ftp.compuware.com/pub/driverstudio/outgoing/OsInfo/OSINFO.DAT
Unfortunately, I didn't understand how did you succeed with Symbols Retriever. Can you explain in details ?
Thanks,
Zvi
dolescle
02-28-2005, 04:08 PM
the simpliest way to do it, is to make sure you are connected to the internet..fire up symbol retriever..and add the files needed by softice..like ntoskrnl.exe, and other files which you can see in winice.dat.try openning winice with notepad and you'll see files like ntoskernel.exe hal.dll look below.."ntdll.dll,kernel32.dll etc.. load this files which can be found in windows\system32\..fire up get symbols and there download will start..at first it me look like "not responding" but if you look at in c:\nmsout\ the files are actually downloaded..specifying the directory in symbol loaders symbol site doesn't seem to work..so just connect to the net and download these files..
That is how I did it.
Problem is bugs are still present..Like when u use BPX showwindow after pressing F12 several times the screen freezes and sometimes the whole system hangs up and you have to restart all over again..I hope people are finding ways to solve this problem..
thanks for the link..
hope to hear from you soon..

DOLESCLE, hi,
Sorry, but I continue dont understand your explanation.
1. I am sure, that my computer is connected to Internet.
2. I am sure, that checkbox "Convert to NMS ..." is checked.
3. After I push "Get Symbols" at Symbol Retriever dialog, I see that c:\symserver is filled by directory chains, and at inner level there are PDB files.
4. But - C:\nmsout continues to be EMPTY !
What is wrong in my actions ? What can I do in order to cause "Get symbols" to convert obtained PDB to NMS ?
dolescle
03-01-2005, 04:04 AM
make sure you checked the checkbox..load symbols in to softice..also I think..the process goes like this..the symbol retriever first download all the necessary *.PDB files which is quite large..so you'll have to wait a little longer for this be downloaded..then after the retriever finished downloading the *.PDB only then this will convert to *.NMS files..
the question is this. Did you add the files "HAL.DLL,NTOSKRNEL.EXE and others that I stated before..
If not you should first add this files " winsrv.dll,basesrv.dll,csrsrv.dll,user32.dll,kernel32.dll,ntdll.dll,ntoskrnl.exe,hal.dll"
which you will find in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ so that this files .PDB are download and then converted to .NMS..
ADD FILES first..
you'll know that it is added because it is stated on symbol retriver and status would be pending..after downloading status would be done..and you'll find the
the .NMS files in the C:\NMSOUT dir..
if your still having problems give me your mail ad..
DOLESCLE, hi,
Thank you for you desire to help me.
Did you mean, that ALL needed files must be added together in order the convertion will start ? I have tried to convert 1 file only (to check that all are OK).
I did it so:
Add NTOSKRNEL.EXE, check that computer is connected to Internet, check the check-box "Convert to NMS ...", push "Get Symbols", wait till "Pending..." will be changed with "Done".
And after that - "C\nmsout" continues to be empty ! (Though in c:\symserver the directory chain with PDB inside was already created).
I understand, that you can send me NMS's, but I think, that the problem must found - I am sure, that if something is not OK, it can be indication of some general problem.
Have you some additional idea, what can be done ?

Now I'm using softice 4.3.2 already and it works fine for windows XP SP2.But the symbols Im using is the ones I downloaded before.I haven't tried the symbol retrivier from 4.3.2 but I think it will still work...The bug in bpx getwindow is already fixed,,but other bugs still exist..like after running or pressing control d several times..sometimes the keyboard won't work anymore..
Im still waiting for a new version..
in your symbol retriever there are dialog window at the bottom, one is for the the symbol site which is the microsoft site..below it is the *.PDB files where the downloaded files are stored after downloading and the converted files are stored in the nmsout folder which has also a dialog box on the bottom of the dialog boxes of the symbol retriever..
Dont just load the ntoskrnel.exe include all the necessary files the one I stated in my above post..
try using another version of the symbol retriever could also be a appz prob..

Wow, this topic suddenly took off! Anyways, to answer a question awhile back about Softice 3.05, I do not believe it can work on XP (don't quote me on this). I have 4.05 working fine though, and it wasn't at all difficult to find on the net along with driverstudio. As it seems the other questions have been answered (from what I've read of this lengthy thread), if you have any more questions post here or e-mail me and I would be glad to help you. Also, to anyone trying "bpx hmemcpy" and receiving and error, I e-mailed Numega support and I received a link (which I don't have with me) stating that hmemcpy has been super-seeded by RtlCopyMemory and RtlMoveMemory.

I've got SoftICE 4.05 installed on my WinXP computer, but when I try to start it up it gives me a message saying:
System error 127 has occured.
The specified procedure could not be found.
Anyone know how to fix this?
Hello zvi,
Put the .dll/.exe and the .pdb files in the same directory, load the .dll/.exe with symbol loader, and click "Module-->translate", a NMS file will be generated.
That's what u wanted right.

I know what your problem is. I used to get the same thing. First you need to get driverstudio 2.7 and put the files in the path it tells you to. (I believe it's windows\system32\drivers or windows\system32). If you can't figure it out, put the files in both directories. Then try and start softice. Reply here with your results so I can guide to the next step.
Hey Guys
I Installed DriverStudio 3.1 with softice 4.3.1 on a Windows XP SP2
I loaded the symbols of all the components listed in the Winace.dat
My problem is that my system is hanging up whenever I load softice (manually and other start options), after it hangs, I can only run softice (ctlr+D) which runs perfectly (mouse& Keyboard) , and when I type (x) it returns to the (hunged) windows, but then I can only return to Softice
some of my settings are listed below in case it make any use:
Control Panal->
Startup->
Softice =Manual
SoftICE Initialization->
General->
Initialization string= X;
Video memory size= 3145 (as I am running under an 1024x768 Res.)
Display Dignostics Message= True
Trap NMI=True
Support Power Management=True
Headless=False
Symbols-> [all loaded]
SoftICE->
Mouse->
PS2, Enhanced
Video->
Universal Video Driver
NOTE:
I've set boot.ini to a "NOGUIBOOT"
Can Anyone tell me what to do to get it work?!!
TIA

Have you tried all of the steps posted by me on the first page of this thread?
yeah
but.... in most of it, you have this key called "Control Set" which is supposed to be located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System.. but there is nothing called like that.. there is "ControlSet001", "ControlSet002" and "CurrentControlSet"
Which one of those do you mean???

Hi,
I have Compuware Driverstudio 3.1 on windows xp sp2, and everything's installed . My problem occurs when I try to get and load symbols into Softice. I have read this entire thread, but nothing has solved it. I open Symbol Retriever and add all the ntoskrnl.exe, kernl24.dll, hal.dll etc files, and it says pending next to all of them. Then I click on get symbols, whereas the symbols start downloading, but none of them succeed. Where it said "pending" now says "error - dowload" and no symbols were retrieved. It doesn't exist a folder named "nmsout" on my hd, and the "symserver" folder remains empty.
How do I solve this? I am connected to the internet. I would very much appreciate all help from you guys!

Has anyone come up with a solution to the XP SP2 problem with SoftICE 4.3.0 or 4.3.1, I am tired of rebooting my laptop...
LaOla

Finally I got reply from Numega Tech support. They said it is a firewall issue and sent me a new Symbol Retriever to try. Guess what - it didn't work. However, at least they pointed me into the right direction by saying that SymChk from the WinDbg package (free download vom www.microsoft.com, use google) can download symbols as well.
So I simply used SymChk to download the whole symbol set for my OS (SymChk can recurse through directories, very nice feature!). After that I fired up Symbol Retriever, set the download path to where I downloaded the symbols with SymChk before, klicked on Get Symbols and Symbol Retriever found the already downloaded files and translated them for SoftICE.
Phew!
One more note: It seems that one of the recent patches changes boot.ini back to default options. I had to edit the /NoExecute= switch again to AlwaysOff (default is OptIn). After a reboot, SoftICE was working properly again.
The next challenge will be running SoftICE on my notebook. The video driver (SIWVID) seems to have problems with my hardware :(

Yes, me :) Have a look at the event log, I guess SIWVID is causing the problem? In my case, this is probably caused by a graphics chipset which SIWVID cannot deal with. I'm currently experimenting with this, because I have the same situation as mentioned somewhere before in this thread: SI won't run on my notebook.

I am in The process of installing softice and getting it to run.
So far :
1. GROG : mentioned -> downloaded Driverstudio 3.1
2. DUNNA : did everything up to the point where she wants me to determine position of int2, so I need symbols of ntoskrnl.dll etc...
3. DOLESCLE : downloaded the files I need : but not using SymbolRetriever, its bogus :--> I use Debug Tools For windows which contains symchk.exe
4. look on windows-site for usage of symchk.exe, execute it in cmd-shell to retrieve ALL !!!!! pdb-files from system32. The files returned via SymbolRetriever are worthless.
5. Dolescle : says use files from WINICE.DAT, I copy the downloaded pdb-files
to system32.
6. Softice symbol loader : options / directory --> to whatever directory to receive nms-files.
6.SOPE : having copied the files to system32, use SoftIce Symbol Loader, load exe/.dll and the Module/translate --> succesfull.
7. going further now, with process, keep in touch

I was waiting for hal.pdb but it is actually called halaacpi.pdb
This is worth knowing if you are downloading all pdb-files and you only need the ! from winice.dat.
I wonder if i need them all though.
I will see...
pdb file of hal.dll is called halaacpi !!!!!! what a joke

1. The remark of DUNNA was a little bit incorrect:
So You start SoftIce manually, don't mind the fact your mouse is not working anymore, you are stuck in it, only ctrl-d works and the commands from softice.
By the way I have a PS2-querty-keyboard branched to the PC in parallel, so I can use this one. ( its easier because i use azerty normally)
execute modified command from DUNNA :
s ntoskrnl!_MmLoadSystemImage L d88 85,c0,0f,84
In my case the answer was found at 0x8059FEFB ( might be different for you though ).
Changed this in the registry like DUNNA suggested.
Reboot.
2. I started SoftIce manualy. ( does not work yet )
I remarked a few errors in blue like
ApiCode Failure : MiUnMapViewSection
MiAddValidPageTo...
I added a few dll like COMDlg32.dll ( i saw this on a chinese forum )
Mind You this is not necessary, you can do without.
I looked in the pdb files for these names (no result).
3. OSINFO.dat retrieved from
ftp://ftp.compuware.com/pub/driverstudio/outgoing/osinfo/osinfo.dat
found this information on http://www.codeguru.com/forum/showthread.php?t=333039 ( Armen entry )
( after searching on google for softice)
I looked in osinfo.dat with hexview and saw the apihook-names... interesting.
4. replaced osinfo.dat in system32/driver , C:\Program Files\Compuware\DriverStudio,
C:\Program Files\Compuware\DriverStudio\VisualSoftIce
5. Reboot and YES !!!!!!!

DOLESCLE, hi,
1. Here is DS3.2 -
http://download.int3.net/debuggers/win_debug
2. You must get for \ROOT\System32\drivers
ftp://ftp.compuware.com/pub/driverstudio/outgoing/OsInfo/OSINFO.DAT
Unfortunately, I didn't understand how did you succeed with Symbols Retriever. Can you explain in details ?
Thanks,
Zvi
i've downloaded but driverstudio.3.1-softice.4.3.1.part19.ra have CRC error with Data1.cab :)
pls give me last part (driverstudio.3.1-softice.4.3.1.part19.ra) thank you

How you get it to work? I can't even load softice, Everytime I try to start it, it gives me a Error code 31 device attached to system not funcitoning.
Anyone else had this problem?
I have the exact same problem, and would also like to know if anyone has a fix for it. I have Driver Studio 3.2 currently installed.
Random Info:
- The event viewer just repeats what the error box tells me, there is no data or any hint as to what driver is causing the problem.
- When I first installed it, in device manager after you click show hidden devices, under non-plug and play drivers there was a "ntice" with a caution symbol on it. Now that I have reinstalled, there is no such thing. For users who have it working, is there a ntice there? If mine is not there, how do I get it there? I have tried re-installing maybe like 5 times :P.
- I have updated osinfo.dat and replaced the 3 sys files from the xp patches (even though 3.2 is supposedly xp compadible). None of that works.
- I have check the display driver matchup in the registry, they match.
Thanks for your help!

Hello! Get latest version of dbghelp.dll and symsrv.dll (can do that by downloading the debugging tools) and replace the ones inside the symbol retriever directory with them.
It should work now.

Hello,
You can download softice 4.05 with the software programme:" emule ".
See: http://www.emule-project.net/home/perl/general.cgi?l=29&rm=download
- Instal " emule "
- after installation, click the connect button.
- if you have a connection, click the search button
Here you have to put in the thing you are looking for. In your case: " softice 4.05 " . you have to select one of the items you see, to start download it. ( you will see a lot of softice links ).
get patience while downloading - it can takes time.
For securety: always scan a download on troyans and viruses.
If you have further questions, let me now.
you can reach me at: luesinum@hotmail.com
If you have installed softice, you will see that this is just the beginning of a long way to go.

hello all.
I have windows XP sp2
I have Compuware Driver Studio 3.1
Softice 4.3.1 build 1722 is "ver" I get from within S-I
I have followed every last item on this thread.
I got it all loaded and it works.
However, it will NOT do breakpoints.
The BRK file only keeps a history of bp's made so it has no issue.
I need to be able to do breakpoints or this software is worthless.
Thank you and I hope we can solve this together.
PS.
Also I downloaded the file from microsux to get all symbols, they are in a folder called symbols, however when I load symbol retriever whether I use http adress or my C drive it comes back "ERROR- Download"
please help.

Anyone???
I have been on google, yahoo, altavista for the last 24 hours.
Every site I find with information about Compuware Driver Suite and S-I on xp say it cant be done or they are all looking for answers to install it.
I have it installed on xp and working.
I need assistance in finding how to get the breaks to work....
Maybe the bpx code for xp is different than that of 98 or nt.
When I type in a bpx and open any exe it does NOT open S-I.
I even tested it on bpx GetLocalTime clicked on clock and NOTHING.
Please anyone got S-I WITH breakpoints working on XP?

Look, I got softice working after many long hours of trying things posted around the internet, and I posted my final instructions near the beginning of this whole post. I decided after a few crashes (though not many) to make the switch to OllyDbg which you should be able to find around the internet. At first I didn't think Olly had nearly as much power sice, but I have found it to be far superior. Just try it, it's free and there are plenty of plugins and help files.

Don't give up on SoftICE. I have been working on getting this thing working for several weeks and have had a lot of success. I still have a few problems but there is a lot of satisfaction once you beat each problem. I now have SI 4.05 working fine on XP SP1. For those that have it working and are just having operating problems, I suggest you waste the paper and print out and put in a binder most of the pages of the SoftICE Commands that come with the program. (They are .pdb's) If you come out of SI to look through the commands while you are doing work in SI, you will affect the memory you are browsing.
I also did like many of you guys did and downloaded the .pdb's from Microsoft. The only way I could translate them was doing one at a time on the command line using (from my memory, spelling may not be perfect) nmsym.exe.
That would translate each one and drop it back into the symserver folder where the pdb's were, but as an NMS. I had to move each one to the proper folder. They would then load into SI but would have a warning. It turns out that at least "my" symbols had no file date on them. Thank you MicroSoft!
I'm still working on that. Once you get ICEExt working, you can get
!Dumpscreen to dump raw binary's to a file. With IceExt you get SIWRender which is suppose to give you a .bmp from a .bin. So far, SiwRender will render the example .bin's but doesn't have enough memory room to render "my" screens. Or at least that's what it says.
Hey, if I'm going to be a "Reverser" I have to reverse. I am now plowing through SiwRender to see how to get more memory into the .ini.
Antbody yet solved that one?

I've installed SoftICE/DriverStudio 3.2 on my XP SP2 laptop (Sony VAIO GRT996).
Everything seems fine except that when I hit Ctrl+D and open SoftICE screen the keyboard stops working and my USB mouse (Microsoft Notebook Optical Mouse 3000) acts crazy.
I read all of the forums and suggestions, tried disabling mouse, keyboard patch, also the touchpad but no avail.
I appreciate any help.
Thanks.

yeah I'm getting a similar problem with DriverStudio 3.1 (SoftICE 4.3.1)..on Windows XP home Sp2..when I set softice to start automatically at startup it doesnt. Then when I start it manually by clicking "Start SoftICE", my computer apperently freezes - mouse and keyboard appear to stop responding but pressing Ctrl+D will popup the softice window and softice works actually but I cannot find how to unfreeze my computer. :( any ideas?
Hey grog, were you able to fix this problem?
If yes please let me know, cause I think I am having the same problem.
Thanks.

I have a problem when put in softice "bpx hmemcpy" message comes out that the symbol is not defined.
so i tried putting "rtlcopymemory" and "rtlmovememory" instead, but for copymemory it also said that the symbol is not defined, and for movememory, even though softice accepts it, it never breaks on anything.
What should I do?

Alright, down to business. I have constantly searched Google and all I ever see is "you can't use Softice on XP".
I think that's a bunch of crap. I have Windows XP Home Edition SP1 and have installed Softice 4.05 along with numerous so-called patches which I have found, but to no avail. Every time windows starts a dos prompt quickly flashes saying something like:
C:\>net start ntice
System Error 127 Cannot start service for some reason...
(and the reason is NOT because serviec ntice doesn't exist, so what the heck is that?)
