View Full Version : LaCie Etherdisk Network problems

We have two LaCie Etherdisk 500gb servers running XP Embeded.

While trying to copy files (either via network or direct cross-over cable), the file server will randomly stop responding to network browsing.

You can still ping the machine. You can still Remote Desktop into the machine. You can still console into the machine.
But you cannot browse to the machine (like via a UNC: \\LaCie\share).
You get a "No network provider was available" nonsense error message.

That's after you try copying.
While it is copying (and it craps out), it just kinda times out..... file size/name/folders irrelevant.

Happens on two boxes. Updated Nic drivers. Same thing.

Any ideas, guys? Event logs aren't showing anything.

Thanks,

What kind of connectivity?

What kind of routers/hubs/switches?

all kinds of routers/switches.

But like I said, I even tried a direct connect between my lappy (Broadcom Nic) and the LaCie box (via Crossover, RealTek nic) and got the same problem.

Hey...no, I didn't. We got two more boxes from LaCie running an upgraded version of their OS...same issues.

We *did* manage to get Fedora Core 2 something on one of the boxes, but the end result is that the boxes are going back to the Vendor and we're replacing with better (albeit MUCH more expensive) HP storage devices.

thanks..

I just managed to get ours working. I had to upgrade the software to 4.0.3. But even after that i was still having troubles.. So it was more of changing domain/workgroup and power cycle the box. Eventually it working after I deleted my share drives and recreated new ones.

For one thing, their web page and support docs were lacking in any usefull information. their tech support in Au, while friendly, were only available to offer limited info. the software upgrade was the best info I got out of them.

My experience with Lacie did not start off on a good footing. Our original 250G Ethernet Disk died on arrival (died while I was trying to configure it). A warranty job was placed and it took them 2 weeks before I got a fixed - actually they replace it with a new box. And then this network problem happend.

Hope you have a better time with HP stuff...

Spoke too soon

It has been dropping out of windows network every hour since I got it running. Power cycle brings the box back but only for an hour or so.

thats about the luck we had. We managed to get replacement boxes to test, but they were useless. Like I said, we tried everything from enabling services we weren't supposed to (you can bring up task manager in new os version, then under users tab, start a new process... ;) ) to updating every driver we could think of to installing Fedora. (Fedora was working ok, we think...but we didn't want to bother).

We already had an HP, but it costs about $2300 more...so we were a tad reluctant to go with more...if a cheaper solution was out there like LaCie...it had to be better, right?? Not hardly. These were production boxes, and we were told we were going to have to "get in line" for repairs to be checked out @ Tech Supp on other side of continent.....evil vile people....

Yeah, Microsoft newsgroups, google searches....I researched that problem for hours....to no avail. I *did* find a possible fix (or what I thought could be a fix), located here: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=821464 but the LaCie folks said it didn't apply to them (XP Embedded), & my company wasn't about to possibly pay Microsoft for a patch that didn't work... So...if you make any more headway...please let me know!

Guest what... Our LaCie Ethernet Disk is going back to vendor too. They still claim they have never seems this problem before.

Anyway we just got ourselves a Snap Server from Snap Appliance. We had one already before but was running low on free disk space.
