Hiya.... I am looking to marry a "menu.xml" file with a javascript engine that can parse through the xml and display as a vertical menu on the leftsid eof a page... this menu.xml file will change nearly hourly, so the XMl transversal needs to be dynamic and lightweight.

I imagine this is possible, but can anyone point me in the right direction? I am coming from pretty much a actionscripting background, so I am failiar to js only by association!

Thanks y'all!

Besides looking through references for various info... basically, if you want the updating to occur without the browser pausing during a long loop, use setTimeout to repeatedly call a function. This takes longer, but may be less noticable to the client. How that's constructed depends on your xml and menu design, etc.

btw, IE features Data Binding (http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/author/databind/overview/databinding_overviews_entry.asp) mechanisms, and then there's the whole Data Services section of MSDN at your disposal...

you might also wanna check out Danny Glazman's HTML Overlays (http://disruptive-innovations.com/zoo/20040830/HTMLoverlays.html).

OK, for the DATA BINDING issues I think that its strictly IE only correct? If so that won't do. I think only IE supports data islands and the such, but i could be very wrong.

As far as the HTML overlays that jbot mentioned, they are indeed very very cool, but I am not sure how that fits my needs?!

you already answered that question in your first post. use the menu.xml (your HTML overlay) and parse it using JS. use the link tag to import it, and then follow DannyG's methodology. use JS to poll the XML file every so often, and then re-apply your HTML overlay parser to it.
