Hello

Played with my site design for the best part of a year on and off. Finally ditched all the incredible nonsense and complexity and gone for utter simplicity. Why it took me so long to realize that simplicity is all people want I am not sure.

Finally arrived at a site design that can house unlimited company links and anything else I care to install really. Nearly got some links in all the sections. Another day on them should add a few hundred more.

Site can be viewed here:

Sorry but I am having to block Opera users until I can figure out why it is resizing a div incorrectly.

Site is a little bland at the moment but I can alter that in time.

Blocks FF as well. Bugger, I'm going to have to dig IE out of the cupboard *brushes off dust before starting it up*.

Ok, I feel like making a list of everything, so here goes...

The title of the page is "New Page 1". I think you need to change that.
You have a DTD (well done :) ) but for some reason you have two html tags. One before the XML prologue and Doctype, and the other one after. There should only be one after.
Mixture of font tags and inline CSS. Bleurgh. Make up your mind, use one or the other (preferably CSS).
You've used tables to arrange the links down the sides. A list would be far more semantic. http://css.maxdesign.com.au/listutorial/ << Some good tutorials on lists.
You said you wanted simplicity for the design. You've kinda taken it to the extreme. You've used virtually the same image over and over again.
Your navigation doesn't look any different from the links to the other sites. Make it stand out.
Not valid code. http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http://sites-4u.com/test/newlook.htm

I think you could make some huge improvements on this site very easily, both with the design and code.

Good luck,
Ol.

Hi chilipie

The link to the tutorials above isn't working for me.

Will attend to all you mentioned in the next few days. Going to run through the company lists first and get them on the site.

Can see there is an issue with fonts and everything needs to be made uniform. At least the design seems to be good for people to find things and for me to display things. After all these companies are on I can gradually improve the look of the site for sure. Is very basic and bland at the moment and I will enjoy making it look good. Can't mess too much at the moment because the links are all affiliation ones and the companies are visiting to check on the design. If I mess it up now and they visit I won't be able to link to them.

Can see that my sniffer blocked FF? - Firefox? The latest version does get through. Hell offa good sniffer I have there though!

Cheers for the tips.

I get a warning saying that your site doesn't want me to browse it. Nil point.

Hi ionsurge

Sounds like the browser sniffer I am using to block Opera is also blocking some versions of Firefox I think. The latest version does get through. Will attempt to alter the sniffer to allow more through. Everything will be allowed through as soon as I can get Opera sorted. Only one thing wrong when Opera views the site and I haven't really attempted to overcome it yet. Been very busy putting companies on. Should be able to attend to it in the next few days.

You can bypass the sniffer here:

Hi

Found out the problem with Opera. Some coding from an old design that just wasn't needed anymore was causing the problem. Everyone should be able to get through now and use the site.

Hi chilipie

Knocked up some css menus now and they are working nicely. An issue with Opera with the right hand side one though which is not moving to the very right. Opera and divs are a bit iffy. Should be able to overcome that I should think.

Site needs to look more professional though with crisper graphics - any suggestions?

A hell of a lot better  !

I still don't like the top graphic very much though. Why don't you have a "proper" header image?

Hi chilipie

What you think of the stuff I have carried out today? Total new colour scheme and a heck offa lot more companies put on. Want to make it kind of friendly looking which is going to put it on borderline gaudy if you see what I mean. Will be attending to the special offers etc soon.

Also everything is now working on Opera. Infact it displays real nice on that one.

Not sure about a header though anything in time. Bit concerned about low resolution users. Trying to keep scrolling of the main site to a minimum.

Will be bringing in the email tomorrow (part of xoops portal) and integrating the resizable forums that I had already made. Vbulletin lookalike phpbb2 forums. They have had a 'category mod' put into them and are now very adaptable.

Time for a break.
