In a follow on from an earlier thread (http://www.codingforums.com/showthread.php?t=48471) could anyone please advise on a high speed wireless connection for a laptop. Mine is being changed shortly and I know it will be an Intel Centrino. I've already played about with it but was very disapointed with the connection speed of only 28kb/sec.

Does anyone know of any faster wireless connection please? It might be one that can be purchased now and then transferred to the new one in a few months time if possible.

Thanks in advance

Well, to what extent do you wish to be wireless? You can use a 802.11 card that will give you wireless around the house or various hot spots around the city. Depending on your country of origin, there are numerous data plans offered through wireless carriers, the most advanced at the moment being Verizon Wireless' EVDO (4th generation wireless data transfer) with speeds comperable to DSL all around the country, this is still in limited release. For portions of the country (USA) that it is not yet available, it will seemlesly revert to a 56k connection with bursts of speed up to 144kbs. This is the 1xrt (3rd generation wireless data transfer). The cost of the truley wireless connection is a bit steep, roughly 79.99 a month for unlimited usage plus an additional 199.99 (one time) for the air card. I had an oppotunity to test the EVDO network prior to it's release and I must say it is FANTASTIC!!! Nothing better than fragging some friends on the move. If you have the need for wireless speed, and cost isn't an object EVDO is the way to go.

This ends my Verizon Wireless commercial. :D

Thanks Basscyst

Sorry, I should have stated I'm in the UK. Occassionally it must be useful for me to email off reports to my employer, but I'm presently trying to make a case for DSL - I know I cant ask for both but thought a wireless connection could be the best of both worlds.

It dosn't have to be 576kb/sec but it needs to be better than my mobile phone connection at 9600 kb/sec and preferably better than the Centrino.

Cost is always an issue.

Ahh, yes. The 28k speed is the max that a standard wireless voice connection can take, it doesn't use a data network at all. You might check into Voda phone and see if they provide coverage for your area, they are Verizon's parent company, not sure of the availability though. I think the best you can get just using your phone as the modem is closer to dial-up at this point.

well if you're in the UK and youve got centrino then you're laughing. 802.11 tech is already available here.

 Why are we laughing at 802.11? It's been out a long time, and IMO is a dying technology. Truley mobile connection options will soon take it's place. Mourn for it, don't laugh at it. :( :p

That's cool to a certain extent, but if you are actually moving, as you went accross from network to network it would have to reconnect would it not? Good for touch and go things like email or if you are sitting in a coffe shop, but if you wanted to maintain a solid connection while on the go, you would be better off leaning towards a wireless carrier. The speed for 802.11 is relative to the connection the router would be connected to, it could be anything from dial up, to the maximum speed of the router or NIC card's wireless signal.

ah, I see its limitations a bit more clearly now. However, as a reply to the questioner, it may still serve their purpose. Obviously not yet for those travelling on a train or bus coz coverage is sporadic. Monthly costs for it are around £40-00.

Hey Weazel,

If you look at the first post, someone was asking about fast wireless internet connection. I possibly cannot post everything that is at the web site below, so I pointed him/her towards it. That is not spam, it is an answer to the question. BTW, the site doesn't even sell high speed wireless cards - just reports news, tips, reviews, etc.
