Does this refer to the first time an IP accesses the site ever, or per day, or does it depend on the tracking software?

How many IPs have been to your site.

I think it must be unique IPs ever. Since I got my tracking program up and running again I've got 321 uniques showing, and 323 records in the IP table... that discrepancy is odd, though it's likely the 2 IPs, mine(work and home), that I'm ignoring for stats.

I was just curious if there was a standard approach to it, like it the term is generally held to refer to uniques ever, etc.

Don't know... the stat software bundled wiith my hosting plan runs a report for a specific time period (say, the last six months) and then reports unique visitors (IPs) for those six months. Does your software just track from the day it was installed?

Yes. I am using ShortStat, which kicks butt, by the way. I'm currently running the new 1.0 Beta Shaun's working on. My mutant Win/IIS server setup has provided some interesting development insights, as well as headaches. ;) I highly recommend anybody with a PHP/MySQL setup pay attention to http://shauninman.com/ for the full 1.0 release, which will hopefully be soon! (And no, I'm not being compensated to say that!)
