Hi Masters,

I'd like to know most efficient ways to promote personal websites. We can easily learn ways to promote commercial websites from the various sources ,but not personal ones. Although we search key words in Search Engines, always only commercial websites come first mainly because of their registration in these search engines.

The reason why I'd like to know the ways to promote personal websites is that most of the personal websites provide us totally free with their own research, softwares, tutorials, or many other things really useful to us. These sites are familiar only to their authors' circle of communication but unknown to world wide people. So how do we promote our personal website so as to be prominent?

All your valuable advice will be willingly welcomed!!!

There are plenty of personal sites that rank higher than commercial sites purely because they're coded well, link to other relevant resources on the web and have great content.

Well it may take a long time but so what if you plan to have your site around a long time- Google and Yahoo feed info off of the dmoz/odp directory, Google's directory is just a mirror of the odp directory. Find a category that fits the subject matter and type of website you have, read the guidelines for submissions and submit your site. When google and yahoo eventually do an info dump of the sites you'll be on there if you were added in time. That helps right there to get onto their directories, you will have a better than average rank just from that alone. The trick is getting added to the ODP and that can take a long long time. But like I said do it anyway, it might not be so long if you are in a category someone takes care of on a timely basis :)

Believe it or not, Google (the God of search engines) still has a place
to submit sites -- for free!

It still takes a while to get indexed, but at least it's a place to start.

The real key to being indexed is to have links to your site from other
sites (preferrably ones that are already popular and have good rankings).

hehe...just from personal experience...i posted a link to a personal site on CodingForums (which i no longer have) and all my google ratings shot up to #1 lol...because there's a link from each post i make on all my posts...so like 100 links from all over coding forums. i dunno if multiple links from one site count, but now that i took it off, google acts as if it doesn't even exist.
