Looking for reference material

I am looking for some reference material, either online or in book form that will give me a good basic understanding of Javascripting. I've been dabbling, mostly cut and paste with really understanding what is going on with the script. I have some experience with BASIC and HTML.
I would like to know what some of you people recommend for the newcomer.
