First, I am not good with search stuff.
I was wondering, how can I make my site seachable from google or yahoo? I think I have to do something with meta tags. is meta tags that's all?
Also, do I have to pay? I am willing to pay a small amount, but perfer free :)
Thanx

Of course this just adds your URL/URI to the search engine's list of sites - it doesn't necessarily mean people will be able to find your site. Many people believe that adding meta tags to your page will immediately increase the amount of hits - they are wrong. Meta tags do play a part in this, but most search engines judge by the actual content of the page. They are helped, of course, by the code structure of the page as well. Having clean, semantic markup means that they can find the information people are looking for more easily. Ok, I'm drifting dangerously off topic here, so I'll get back to meta tags (after Megan has stopped asking me what my favourite pizza is on MSN :p ). These are the meta tags that I normally use (I think Brady might have said these are the ones he uses as well.)
<meta name="Description" content="My site is about stuff etc." />
<meta name="Author" content="Your Name" />
<meta name="Copyright" content="2004, Your Name/Company" />
<meta name="Revised" content="12/12/04" />
<meta name="Expires" content="never" />
If you don't understand me, I'm sure someone else can explain much better :p .

You might also want to submit your site to dmoz (a free open directory).

Not sure who, but someone told me I have to pay, the high I pay, the better it is.

I think you can pay to get higher ranking in search engines, but very few people do. I think it's a bit pointless personally.

Rank is increased by the number of links to your page. So if you can get a link to your page on other sites, that'll boost your rating. Directories are a good way to do that.

Yep. It's a link.
For Google, the higher the page rank of the page that links to you, the higher your page rank :)

Is the keywords tag not that important any more?

People just put all sorts of stuff unrelated to their site in it, so now (most) search engines ignore it.
